{"id":89,"date":"2020-01-04T22:35:04","date_gmt":"2020-01-04T22:35:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wataugahamradio.net\/?page_id=89"},"modified":"2020-01-04T22:35:04","modified_gmt":"2020-01-04T22:35:04","slug":"skywarn","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wataugahamradio.net\/?page_id=89","title":{"rendered":"SkyWarn"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-background-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#381fd6\">WARC Supports SKYWARN<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-primary-color has-subtle-background-background-color has-text-color has-background\"><strong>SPOTTER QUICK REFERENCE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Skywarn reporting criteria are as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Winter \/ Cold Weather:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li><strong>5\u201d of snow in a 12 hour period\u00a0<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>6\u201d of snow in a 24 hour period\u00a0<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>0.25\u201d of ice accumulation\u00a0<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Spring\/Summer\u00a0Warm\u00a0Weather:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li><strong>Rotating wall clouds, funnel clouds and tornadoes<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Hail &#8211; initially ANY sized hail, then only hail penny sized (\u00be\u201d) and larger<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Winds that cause damage to large limbs of live growth, utility poles or structures. We do not ESTIMATE wind speeds, but measured winds of 50mph or greater can be reported<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Flash flooding in areas not normally prone to flash flooding. (Also, please do not estimate rainfall rates)<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Any significant weather-related damage not covered above<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p> WARC has completed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the Blacksburg National Weather Service office authorizing the establishment of a Watauga County SKYWARN net. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong> WARC will<\/strong> sponsor a <strong>SKYWARN Information Net. <\/strong> This net will meet at 8:00 pm on the first Sunday of each month on the WA4J Repeater<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A SKYWARN net will be activated on the WA4J repeater (147.36  +600  103.5 tone) when a storm watch or warning is issued for Watauga County NC by the NWS in Blacksburg, VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> When the net is activated, the normal courtesy tone will be replaced with the SKYWARN courtesy tone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watauga County is at the far edge  of Blacksburg\u2019s radar coverage, and mountains create areas not reachable by radar.  Because of this, ground spotters are critical in identifying storm conditions not viable on radar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-background-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#381fd6\"> <strong>SPOTTER GUIDELINES from the NWS<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <em>Spotters checking into the net should review and understand these procedure <em>before checking into the net<\/em><\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong>1. An exact address:<\/strong> \u201c1750 Forecast Drive, Blacksburg, VA\u201d     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>b. If mobile, the nearest intersection:<\/strong> \u201cForecast Drive and          Tech Center Drive\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>  <strong>4. What to Report: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> a. <strong>Tornadoes<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> b. <strong>Funnel Clouds<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> c. <strong>ROTATING wall clouds<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> d.<strong> Flash flooding<\/strong>        <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> i. Creeks or streams out of their banks       <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> ii. Water flowing over a road\/roads closed due to flood waters       <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> iii. One inch of rain or more in less than one hour <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> e. <strong>Damage, injuries, or loss of life and\/or property<\/strong>          <strong>caused by flooding, wind, hail, and tornadoes.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>  f. <strong>Trees, power lines or tree limbs 4\u201d in diameter<\/strong> <strong>or larger downed by winds<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> g. <strong>50 MPH wind gusts or higher<\/strong> (measured or estimated)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> h. <strong>Hail (any size)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> i. <strong>Snow 1\u201d in depth\u201d, 4\u201d in depth and the total snowfall when the snow has ended.<\/strong>  <strong>Provide the length of time the snow fell.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> j. <strong>Ice that begins to accumulate on roads<\/strong>, <strong>and when it accumulates to \u00bc\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>  5. <strong>Time:<\/strong>       <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a. Time of the event      <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> b. Duration of the event <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-background-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#381fd6\"> <strong>SKYWARN NET OPERATIONAL MODES<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong><strong>Standby Mode<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cStand-by Mode<\/strong> means the repeater is free for normal use, however, a SKYWARN Net Control Station will be standing by for any severe weather reports.  Please pause  briefly between transmissions allowing the courtesy tone to reset &amp; any necessary weather related traffic to be passed.\u201d Note:  This mode is used when severe weather is expected but has not arrived or when severe weather has cleared an area.  This mode is normally used during watches <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong><strong>Active Mode<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cActive Mode <\/strong>means the repeater is now under a Directed Net.  <strong>All traffic should be directed through the Net Control Station<\/strong>.  Severe weather is occurring within or approaching Watauga County.\u201d Note: This mode is used when severe weather is occurring or imminent within the county. This mode is normally used during warnings.  If no information is received, the NCS can elect to downgrade to Standby Mode <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong><strong>Emergency Mode<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cThe<\/strong> repeater is under the control of the Net Control Station.  All traffic is restricted to  emergency or priority traffic only.  Extreme severe weather and\/or damage is occurring  within the county.\u201d Note: This mode is reserved for extreme weather events or significant damage reports.  This mode should only be in effect for short time intervals. Revert to Active Mode as soon as possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-background-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#381fd6\"> <strong>Severe Weather Reporting Criteria<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.
